The Soccer Dogs are on a Mission to connect the soccer world with the dog rescue world. Soccer playing dogs have tremendous value to soccer lovers. There are huge demands and no supply of soccer-playing dogs, until now. A Soccer Dog Team is leading the way to help ball motivated rescue dogs to find a home in a soccer-loving family.

High energy ball motivated rescue dogs can be difficult to adopt because of their high energy needs however they often make great soccer dogs. Soccer is a perfect activity for high energy dogs because they receive a physical and mental workout on a daily basis which helps them become calm, obedient, happy dogs. There are many potential Soccer Dogs in local dog rescue facilities.

Soccer Dog Adoption Program

The Soccer Dog Adoption Program (SDAP) is a fundraising program for dog rescue organizations and for foster families. 90% of an elevated adoption fee goes to the foster or rescue and 10% to SDO or SoccerDogs.Org for managing the program.

Soccer playing dogs are peers to service dogs because of their soccer skills and they can have tremendous value making them a fundraiser for anyone interested in identifying them in the rescue system.

After the Potential Soccer Dogs are adopted to a soccer-loving home, they can be trained to play Dog Soccer Games at public, private, and corporate events earning revenue for their family. SDO will be their employment agent helping the Soccer Dogs get booked at events to play Dog Soccer Games.

According to the American Humane Society,  roughly 64 percent of the 4.3 million animals that entered “kill” shelters were euthanized — approximately 2.7 million animals in just 1,000 shelters out of an estimated 3,500 throughout the country.

Many of these animals are euthanized due to overcrowding but countless numbers lose their lives because of medical problems that could be treated. Sadly, only 25 percent of dogs that enter animal shelters are adopted.

Many ball motivated dogs can be trained to play soccer. Ms.Z and BEK are the original Soccer Collies. Ms.Z died in late 2013 and BEK passed in June 2022.

SoccerDogs.Org is helping to make rescue dogs more valuable!

Her assertive play is promising and she's a great example of the type of soccer dog that you can find in the rescue world.

You can bring a basketball or a soccer ball to your local dog rescue facility and bounce the ball in front of every kennel to identify a potential soccer dog. When a dog shows an interest in the ball, take the dog to a play area and see what it will do with the ball. They usually all bite the ball. If they push the ball around, you have identified a potential soccer dog. Biting the ball can be dealt with through training. Weekly soccer dog groups share training ideas and have fun at your local dog rescue organization through a Soccer Dog Adoption Program.

Soccer Dog Training Tips:

Start with a basketball because they have a hard time popping them although some can and will pop your basketball. Basketballs are hard on their teeth so graduate to a soft ball as soon as possible.

Work with them in a hallway because the ball goes forward and backward more than all over the place. You do not need a large yard, your soccer dog just needs a lot of exercise. Using an empty or near empty room works great too. You stand in the doorway and your soccer dog brings the ball to you. If the ball gets past you, your dog has scored a goal.

The most important training objective is to get your dog to bring you the ball. Give them a lot of praise when they bring it to you. If you continue to go to the ball and kick it, they will think that’s what the game is and they will not learn to bring the ball to you. Be patient and encourage them to bring you the ball. If your dog is excited about playing with you (KEY – excitement) they will figure out how to move that ball around without picking it up in their mouth. Be patient, do not move around. The more your dog touches the ball the better their soccer skills will be.
